Marcello Abbondanza will be the new head coach of the Bulgarian women’s national volleyball team, the Bulgarian Volleyball Federation said. This marks his return to a job he held more than ten years ago.

Marcello Abbondanza, who joined the competition at the last moment, prevailed over the candidacies of the team’s former coach Ivan Petkov and the coach of Levski Sofia, Radoslav Arsov.

After talks with the three candidates last week, the Federation’s Management Board approved the proposal for Abbondanza with 10 votes in favor. Ivan Petkov received 5 votes, and Radoslav Arsov received one.”

The Italian coach will take charge of the team with a two-year contract, with an option to extend it for another year. The minimum goals set for him are to maintain the team’s place in the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) next season and a place among the top ten teams at the European Championship.

Born in 1970 in Cesena, Italy, Abbondanza coached Bulgaria’s women’s national team from 2011 to 2014, as well as the national teams of Greece and Canada. He has coached Carnaghi Villa Cortese (Italy), Rabita Baku (Azerbaijan), Fenerbahce (Turkiye), THY Istanbul (Turkiye), Chemik Police (Poland).
