A judge and a prosecutor have been appointed as deputy justice ministers, the Justice Ministry said in a press release on Monday. Judge Andrey Georgiev and prosecutor Georgi Balkov were appointed by an order of caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov dated March 2 and will join the team of caretaker Justice Minister Andrey Yankulov, according to the ministry.
Georgiev holds a law degree from St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia. Since July 2017, he has served as a junior judge at the Sofia City Court, working in both the appellate civil panels and the criminal division. From July 2019, he has been a judge in the civil divisions of the Sofia District Court. Between May 2022 and February 2023, he was seconded to the Registry of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. He also worked as a part-time assistant lecturer in the general part of civil law at Sofia University from October 2018 to June 2022 and has been a part-time assistant lecturer in property law at New Bulgarian University since March 2018. He speaks English, German and Italian.
Balkov holds a law degree from St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia. Between 2013 and September 2016, he worked as a legal adviser at the Customs Agency at the Ruse Customs Office. In the following year, as a candidate junior prosecutor, he completed mandatory training at the National Institute of Justice. Between July 2017 and July 2020, he served as a junior prosecutor and later as a prosecutor at the District Prosecutor’s Office in Pleven. He was seconded to the Sofia District Prosecutor’s Office until July 2021 and has been a prosecutor at the District Prosecutor’s Office in Pernik since September 2021. He speaks English and German.
