Police in the western Serbian city of Sabac arrested five farmers who have blocked roads across Serbia since February 11, 2026, in protest at government agricultural policy, local media said on Monday.

The farmers are suspected of assaulting officers and obstructing police during an attempt to block the Badovinci and Trbusnica border crossings with Bosnia and Herzegovina on March 1, 2026, N1 said.

N1 said they ignored a police warning and order to clear access to one of the crossings and threw stones at gendarmerie and police officers, while one of the suspects tried to run over a gendarmerie officer with a tractor.

Tanjug quoted the Serbian Interior Ministry as saying that two gendarmerie officers sustained minor injuries from pyrotechnic devices.

The suspects were ordered held for up to 48 hours and will then be handed over to the competent prosecutor's office with criminal charges brought against them.

Later on Monday, protesters will gather in the western Serbian city of Cacak to consider their next steps, RTS said.

More than 30 farmers’ associations have been protesting for 20 days and blocking major, regional, and local roads across Serbia over the dire state of agriculture and the Serbian government’s failure to meet their demands, N1 reported.

Farmers are calling for protection of the domestic market and a temporary ban on milk imports until domestic inventories are depleted. They also demand import fees and quotas on milk and meat, as well as the establishment of a border laboratory to inspect imports and prevent economic fraud involving milk and dairy products.
