The caretaker government has launched a large-scale initiative for dialogue with the sports community by sending a strategic questionnaire to all licensed sports federations in the country, the Government Information Service said on Monday.

The questionnaire was prepared at the initiative of Dimitar Berbatov, in his capacity as adviser on youth and sports matters to caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov, with the consent and support of caretaker Youth and Sports Minister Dimitar Iliev.

The questionnaire marks the start of a comprehensive study aimed at assessing the current challenges facing sport in Bulgaria. In a letter addressed to federation presidents, the government notes that clearly formulated responses, proposals, and ideas will provide reliable and representative data to support the executive branch in revising the model for financing and managing physical education and sport.

“I expect comprehensive and up-to-date information to be gathered about the federations and clubs that develop sport in Bulgaria,” Berbatov said, as quoted by the press service. He added that, following an analysis of the data, a stable framework could be established on which the next regular government can build a realistic long-term strategy in support of youth and sport.

The statement said that the initiative aims to lay the groundwork for a national reform focused on the financial and structural sustainability in the development of Bulgarian sport. Federations are required to submit the requested information by March 11, 2026.

The government said that the collected data will be processed and used to formulate concrete policies and measures to strengthen the financial and organizational sustainability of the sports sector.

Berbatov was appointed to his current role on February 25. In this position, he will support caretaker Prime Minister Gurov and the government in developing and implementing policies related to sports, active lifestyles, and youth development in this country.
