Bulgarian cross-country skiers Mario Matikanov and Daniel Peshkov finished in 22nd place in Wednesday’s team sprint in Tesero.

Matikanov also recorded the best individual performance among the Bulgarian cross-country skiers at the Milano Cortina Games, placing 49th in the 10-kilometre interval start.

Reflecting on his Olympic experience, the 21-year-old athlete wrote on his Facebook profile:
“Today marks the end of my Olympic adventure in Milano Cortina 2026. It was a tremendous honour for me to represent Bulgaria on the world’s biggest sporting stage. I’m happy that in some of the events I was able to show good form and measure myself against the very best. The experience was incredibly exciting! Now it’s time for a short break, after which I will focus entirely on training for the next challenges. I promise I will return even stronger for the next Games! Thank you all for your support!”

Following the Games, Matikanov is leaving Tesero and heading to Norway to compete in the Youth Cross-Country Skiing World Championships from March 2 to 8 in Lillehammer.

Peshkov still has one more Olympic event remaining - the 50-kilometer race on Saturday.
