Former Bulgarian football star Dimitar Berbatov will advise Prime Minister Andrey Gurov on sports and youth matters and will support the Youth and Sports Ministry in developing and implementing policies concerning sports and an active way of life for young people, the press centre of the cabinet reported on Wednesday.
"I accept this position with responsibility towards the development of sport in Bulgaria, and without remuneration, motivated solely by the desire to contribute with my experience and energy," said Berbatov.
As a first step in his new position, Berbatov is starting an extensive initiative involving a strategic survey among all licensed sport federations to gather objective information on the state of various sports in Bulgaria, the needs of the clubs and challenges facing the development of youth sports. Based on the results, a thorough analysis will be provided by specialists, which will help build a stable framework for long-term policies in this field.
"Sport must be a national strategy. When the prime minister is committed to the development of sport, this is a clear sign that the government will take active measures to promote sport activities in this country," said Berbatov during a meeting with the PM.
Prime Minister Gurov noted: "Sport guarantees not only physical and mental health. It builds character, personality and a strong society."
