According to a declaration by GERB-UDF, presented by MP Georg Georgiev on Wednesday, support for Ukraine is not an act of momentary solidarity but a strategic investment in Europe’s security and in preserving the international order. Georgiev marked four years since the start of the Russian Federation’s full-scale military aggression against Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, which was commemorated on Tuesday. The statement stresses that Ukraine is defending not only its own independence but also the stability of the European Union and NATO.

The declaration notes that manifestations of modern Russian imperialism can be traced back to 2008, with the military aggression against Georgia and the occupation of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The insufficiently firm international response at the time, it says, created the conditions for further escalation, culminating in the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014. “Crimea was and will remain part of Ukraine,” Georgiev said, recalling that Bulgaria supported the sanctions regimes imposed on the Russian Federation.

He added that when the full-scale invasion began four years ago, the world responded decisively, while Bulgaria, amid a series of domestic political crises, showed hesitation. According to him, it was the National Assembly and the pro-Euro-Atlantic majorities that restored strategic consistency to Bulgaria’s position. Through its decisions, Parliament reaffirmed unconditional support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

“Today, the choice facing Europe and Bulgaria remains the same – between the rule of law and the law of force,” the declaration states. The GERB-UDF parliamentary group says Bulgaria will continue to be a reliable member of the European Union, a NATO ally, a consistent defender of international law, and an active participant in efforts to restore peace, security and stability in Europe.

“Supporting Ukraine means supporting freedom, democracy and the future of the European continent,” Georgiev concluded.
