Irena Georgieva has been proposed as caretaker Minister of Tourism in the draft cabinet of Andrey Gurov.

Georgieva has graduated in Sociology from Sofia University, receiving a gold medal for outstanding academic achievement and active community involvement, the Tourism Ministry said.

Virtually her entire professional career has been dedicated to the tourism sector. She has close to 25 years of management experience as the head of travel agencies and has earned a number of professional certificates in the field.

From February 2015 to May 2021, she served as deputy minister of tourism.

Between 2006 and her reappointment as deputy minister of tourism on June 9, 2023, Georgieva was a member of the Board of the Association of Bulgarian Tour Operators and Travel Agents. She chaired the association’s Board from 2009 to 2013.

Georgieva is also a recognized international expert in tourism. From 2009 until she assumed office as deputy minister of tourism, she was a member of the Board of Directors of the European Travel Agents’ and Tour Operators’ Associations, serving as director and deputy director. She was president of the organization from 2010 to 2012.
