In a declaration delivered on behalf of the parliamentary group of the BSP–United Left, MP Galin Durev said Wednesday that Vasil Levski left not only the idea of liberation but also a moral compass for statehood, for a just, democratic, pure and sacred republic where the law stands above personal interest. The declaration was read on the occasion of the 153rd anniversary of Vasil Levski’s death.

“Today Bulgaria once again pauses in silence before the name of Vasil Levski - the Apostle of Freedom, the man who turned the dream of a free and dignified homeland into a national covenant. Years pass and generations change, but Levski’s image remains unchanged - pure, incorruptible, and demanding. He does not belong to one era or one political force. He belongs to the conscience of the Bulgarian people. He is the measure, the highest standard of national dignity and patriotism,” Durev said.

The MP noted that each year, when people bow their heads in memory of Levski, they are obliged to ask themselves the hardest questions - to what extent they remain faithful to his precepts, whether they manage to be worthy of the freedom won with such self-sacrifice, or whether petty passions and divisions often prevail over the common national interest.

“Today, more than ever, society expects from us not confrontation but responsibility; not loud words but consistent actions; not personal battles but work for the benefit of Bulgaria. Because Levski left us an example of modesty, discipline, and unconditional dedication to society,” he said.

“From this rostrum, we should more often remind ourselves that freedom is not a one-time act but a daily responsibility, and that the State is built not with slogans but with honesty, justice, and service to the people,” the MP added.

Durev concluded: "Let us remember today that the name of Vasil Levski is not only a reason for tribute, but a benchmark for our decisions and behavior. History will judge not our words, but whether we have succeeded in being worthy of the Bulgaria for which he gave his life”.
