Speaking to reporters in Parliament’s lobby on Wednesday, National Assembly Deputy Chair and GERB-UDF Deputy Floor Leader Kostadin Angelov said that his political entity believes the proposed caretaker Cabinet is the personal responsibility of President Iliana Iotova. He was commenting on the lineup presented earlier in the day.
“If President Iotova does not approve this Cabinet - and there has been such a precedent in the past, it could be returned. Apparently, she approves each of the ministers,” Angelov said.
“We will see how this Cabinet handles its main task of organizing fair elections,” he added. “We have always expected elections to be fair and have always worked toward that goal,” Angelov noted.
The GERB-UDF Deputy Floor Leader said that they had never focused on the composition of the Council of Ministers, which is appointed by the President. “We have no issue with any of the ministers,” he said. “For us, it has never mattered who heads a particular ministry. What matters to us is explaining to people what we offer during the upcoming campaign,” Angelov said, adding that GERB-UDF’s main priority is to regain voters’ trust.
Asked whether he sees links between the proposed caretaker ministers and certain political entities, Angelov replied, “We see serious signals and nods in many directions. We will see whether they are understood.“ Pressed to elaborate, he said he believes the idea behind the proposed caretaker Cabinet is to give certain newly formed political entities an edge and help them win the election.
Earlier in the day, caretaker prime minister–designate Andrey Gurov presented the proposed government to President Iotova, who said she would issue decrees appointing the caretaker Cabinet and scheduling snap parliamentary elections for April 19.
