In a declaration delivered on behalf of the parliamentary group Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria, MP Elisaveta Belobradova said from the parliamentary rostrum on Wednesday that February 18, 2026 marks 153 years since the hanging of Vasil Levski, one of the most powerful symbols of Bulgarian statehood.
Belobradova said that Levski spoke of a “pure and holy republic” not as an abstract concept but as a concrete model of governance. She emphasized that he understood the primacy of the Bulgarian national interest even at a time when the Bulgarian state did not yet exist.
According to her, the most important lesson to remember from Levski is that he envisioned a country in which Bulgarians live today. She outlined three defining characteristics of that vision: a free Bulgaria, which the country currently has; a state in which all citizens are equal, which she described as today’s reality; and a Bulgaria that stands alongside the other European nations. Belobradova argued that in 2026, with Bulgaria reaching the highest level of integration within the European Union, the country is approaching what Levski truly dreamed of achieving.
She added that if Bulgarians have indeed fulfilled what Levski bequeathed to them, their true task and duty is to defend it to the end – namely, Bulgaria’s role at the heart of Europe and its independence and freedom.
