site.btaTundzha Becomes First Municipality to Adopt BTA’s Cyrillic Typeface
The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) has provided its LIK typeface to the Tundzha Municipality in the southeastern Yambol Region. The agreement for its free use was signed at the BTA press club in Yambol on Wednesday by BTA Director General Kiril Valchev and Tundzha Mayor Stanchо Stavrev. Tundzha is the first Bulgarian municipality whose administration has requested and is receiving the specially created typeface, produced by the National Academy of Art on commission from BTA, Valchev said.
Until now, the typeface has already been used by the National Institute of Justice, the Diplomatic Institute, the State Cultural Institute to the Foreign Minister, the Ministry of Culture, the National Library, Sofia University, the University of National and World Economy, the Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion Agency, and the Filip Kutev State Folklore Ensemble, Valchev said.
He recalled that the typeface was created in 2025 to mark the 1170th anniversary of the creation of the Glagolitic alphabet. “All Bulgarian institutions have the same problem – complete diversity in the typefaces we use. It is very encouraging that Tundzha Municipality is thinking about a unified appearance. This is a registered typeface with the Patent Office. BTA has been using it since February 16 of last year, when it turned 127,” the director general of the national news agency added.
According to him, there is symbolism in providing the LIK typeface to Tundzha. It is Bulgaria's fifth-largest municipality by area and has a significant history.
Mayor Stavrev said: “It is extremely important for us as Bulgarians to use a typeface created deliberately and specifically in Cyrillic." He expressed hope that other municipalities will see its advantages and quality, and that it may truly become a national typeface for the state administration.
