The lowest temperatures in Bulgaria in January are expected to range between minus 18 and minus 13 degrees Celsius, with milder conditions along the Black Sea coast, while the highest temperatures will be between 10 and 15 degrees, reaching up to 18 degrees in some areas of the Fore-Balkan region, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Krasimir Stoev, a meteorologist at the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH), told BTA.

According to him, the average monthly temperature in January is expected to be around the climatic norm. In northern Bulgaria and the higher plains, this norm ranges between minus 2 and 1 degree, along the Black Sea coast, in the Upper Thracian Plain and the Struma River valley it is between 0 and 4 degrees, while in mountainous regions it is between minus 10 and minus 3 degrees.

The month will begin with cold weather, followed by a rise in temperatures. During the second and third ten-day periods of January, precipitation in the form of rain and snow is expected.

January usually brings the coldest days of the year. The absolute minimum temperature recorded in Bulgaria is minus 38.3 degrees Celsius, measured in the town of Tran on January 7, 1947. January can also see intense warm spells, during which temperatures have risen to between 20 and 23 degrees, Stoev added.
