In Tokyo, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev and Princess Takamado, a member of Japan’s Imperial Family, visited an exhibition dedicated to Bulgarian-Japanese relations. The exhibition, titled “Bulgaria and Japan: Politics, Diplomacy, Figures and Events”, traces the history of relations between the two countries from the late 19th century to the present. It is hosted by Waseda University in the Japanese capital and was curated by Vera Stefanova, a Japanologist and long-time diplomat, and Associate Professor Evgeny Kandilarov from the Japanese Studies Department at the St. Kliment Ohridski University in Sofia.

Bulgarian-Japanese relations were also the focus of a lecture delivered by Radev. In his remarks, he noted the historically good cooperation between the two countries and identified several areas with potential for future collaboration, such as the digital sector, high technology, innovation, and artificial intelligence.

Bulgaria’s head of State also said that he is scheduled to be received in audience by His Majesty Emperor Naruhito and to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, during which a joint declaration will be signed to establish a strategic partnership between the two countries.

In her address, Princess Takamado highlighted the strong ties between Bulgaria and Japan, noting that many members of the Imperial Family have visited Bulgaria. She emphasized the country’s rich historical and cultural heritage and shared that an increasing number of Japanese students are choosing to study the Bulgarian language.

Founded in 1882, Waseda University is one of Japan’s oldest and most prestigious higher education institutions and has a cooperation agreement with the St. Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia. Waseda has approximately 50,000 students and boasts seven alumni who have gone on to become Prime Ministers of Japan.

During his visit, Radev also conferred with Waseda University President, Professor Aiji Tanaka.
