International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said Bulgaria’s adoption of the euro was both a major milestone and a deeply personal moment on Thursday.
In posts on LinkedIn and Facebook, Georgieva looked back on the country’s tough shift from communism and the hyperinflation that wiped out her mother’s savings, and said the lessons of legal transparency, steady policy and public trust mattered for any nation seeking stability in a changing world.
“[On Thursday] Bulgaria joins the euro—a milestone that feels deeply personal,” Georgieva wrote on LinkedIn and Facebook, recalling “rough transition from communism, the hyperinflation that wiped out my mother’s savings, and the crises we weathered together.”
In her post, Georgieva noted that the journey had required “courage, reforms, and faith in European values”.
“Now, Bulgaria will not only reap economic benefits but also help shape Europe’s future,” Georgieva wrote. She added that “the lessons—legal transparency, consistent policy, public trust—matter for every nation seeking stability in a changing world.”
