Romania’s Development Minister Attila Cseke said on Wednesday that tens of thousands of positions in local and state administration will be reduced. In an interview with Antena3 TV, he said that about 57% of the positions, nearly 6,000 jobs, will be cut, including advisers to mayors, deputy mayors, and state secretaries.

The Minister explained that almost 6,000 of the 10,700 positions in the offices of locally elected and high-ranking officials, including the Prime Minister and state secretaries will be eliminated. The changes will reduce the number of advisers for mayors from two to one, remove adviser roles for deputy mayors and state secretaries, and cut the number of advisers for ministers from four to three, while the Prime Minister will have five instead of eight. He added that job cuts will also affect local police forces.

The reform is part of the second fiscal and budgetary package of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan’s government.
