Nearly BGN 8.5 million will be invested in the complete renovation of the water supply network in the village of Samoranovo, Dupnitsa Municipality, the Regional Development and Public Works ministry said in a press release on Wednesday.

Regional Minister Ivan Ivanov said that the state-funded project will address the long-standing water supply problems of the settlement, home to more than 1,500 residents and located near Bulgaria’s newest prison. On Wednesday, Ivanov inaugurated the project together with Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Zafirov and Dupnitsa Mayor Parvan Dangov.

The initiative is financed under the investment programme for municipal projects following an agreement between the ministry and the municipality. An advance payment of BGN 1.453 million has already been made. The project envisages the full reconstruction of the village’s water supply system, which will reduce breakdowns and ensure reliable and safe household drinking water. The system will also be divided into zones, making future water management and pressure regulation easier. In addition, new fire hydrants will be installed, improving fire safety at the foot of the Rila Mountain, where the village is located.

Currently, the condition of Samoranovo’s water supply network is unsatisfactory, with frequent breakdowns. Over the years, residents have repeatedly staged protests over water shortages and the authorities’ lack of response.
