About 140 cyclists from Bulgaria, Romania and several other European countries will join the Dunav Ultra cycling marathon, which will start on August 30 in Vidin, organizer Boris Begamov told BTA on Wednesday.

The marathon, which is not competitive, is being held for the 12th time, with the main goal being to promote the Danube region as an attractive destination for cycling tourism. Enthusiasts will travel over 700 kilometres, passing through eight regions and 32 municipalities. The route connects the most northwestern and most northeastern settlements in Bulgaria, namely the villages of Kudelin and Durankulak, Begamov noted.

Flags will be placed in each key settlement, indicating the official checkpoints with the emblem of the respective municipality. In order for the crossing to be recognized, each participant must take a selfie at each of these points, Begamov pointed out, adding that after successfully completing the route, participants will receive an official certificate of passage through the mobile application Dunav Ultra App, which, in addition to certifying participation, also promotes the route and the region.

What is new this year is that innovative bicycle repair stations will be installed in ten municipalities within the perimeter of the route. They are a donation from the America for Bulgaria Foundation, which has been supporting the development of tourism along the Danube River for more than five years, the organizer said.

The twelfth Dunav Ultra is being implemented with the assistance of the municipalities of Vidin, Oryahovo, Dolna Mitropolia, Gulyantsi, Nikopol, Belene, Dve Mogili, Ruse, Tutrakan, Silistra, General Toshevo and Shabla, with the support of the Tourism Ministry.
