The village of Corten in Moldova’s Taraclia District will unveil a monument to Bulgarian national hero and revolutionary Vasil Levski, also revered as “the Apostle of Freedom,” on August 28, local authorities reported on Wednesday. The official inauguration coincides with the village's 195th anniversary celebrations.
Construction of the monument began on August 11, in Corten’s central park, near the local World War II memorial. A ceramic-tiled pedestal has already been installed. A poly-concrete bust of Levski will be mounted atop the pedestal, accompanied by a marble plaque bearing an inscription and a quote from the revolutionary. The plaque was crafted in the nearby town of Taraclia.
The initiative for the monument was introduced by local councillor Fiodor Sabii, who presented the proposal during a village council meeting on July 12.
Corten's local authorities shared plans to continue honouring prominent Bulgarian historical figures. Future projects include monuments dedicated to Hristo Botev, a Bulgarian revolutionary and poet, and Paisii of Hilandar, a Bulgarian Orthodox clergyman and major Bulgarian National Revival figure.
The project received financial and organizational backing from Bulgaria.
