Most people in the Republic of Moldova do not support the idea of unification with Romania, Moldovan President Maia Sandu said at a press conference in Chisinau on Thursday, as reported by Agerpres and Digi24.
Data from the latest Public Opinion Barometer, carried out in September 2025, show that most Moldovan citizens would oppose unification in the event of a referendum. Almost 46% would vote against, and 33% would vote in favour.
“At least according to the polls, there is no support from the majority. We are a democratic country and we strictly follow the decision of the citizens,” President Sandu said at the press conference, adding that she had not discussed the topic with European leaders.
Earlier this month, in an interview with the British journalists Rory Stewart and Alastair Campbell, the hosts of the biggest podcast in the United Kingdom, Sandu said she would vote in favour of unification with Romania if a referendum on the matter were held.
On Thursday, she recalled that this was not the first time she had expressed her view on the topic, but she did not present a specific scenario in which she would organize such a nationwide vote.
“What I want most for the Republic of Moldova is for us to be at peace, for our citizens to be at peace and in safety, and for us to remain part of the free world. These, from my point of view, are the most important things, especially in an increasingly difficult regional and international context. This can be ensured through the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union and it could possibly be ensured if the Republic of Moldova were under the protection of Romania. For the first plan, for European integration, we have the support of the majority of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova,” the President said.
