Queues of heavy trucks on the Maritsa Motorway, waiting to cross the Kapitan Andreevo Border Checkpoint, continued on Thursday morning, the checkpoint chief Yani Peychev said. The line stretched about 25 kilometers, with drivers waiting 15 to 20 hours to be processed, Peychev added.

The problem is exacerbated by ongoing Greek farmers’ protests, which have lasted two months and caused freight operators to reroute shipments.

On Wednesday morning, the motorway queue reached 27 kilometers, decreasing to 20 kilometers by late afternoon. Later in the day, a working meeting was held due to congestion at the adjacent Turkish checkpoint Kapikule. Measures to ease traffic and speed up processing of freight trucks were discussed, including synchronizing breaks and shift rotations at both the Bulgarian and Turkish checkpoints, as the current time difference affects operations, Peychev explained.

The Kapitan Andreevo customs checkpoint is operating at full capacity. Over the past 24 hours, 3,000 trucks were processed, including 1,428 entering and 1,572 exiting the country, the regional press centre of the Customs Agency in Svilengrad reported.
