The Council of Ministers on Wednesday permitted five foreign-flagged research vessels operating in Bulgaria’s maritime areas of the Black Sea to carry out a detailed survey linked to the Kardesa submarine cable project. The project envisages a fiber optical cable system connecting the Caucasus region and Europe, namely Aheloy with Poti in Georgia, with a branch to Sile in Turkiye.

The project aims to create a new digital corridor between the major network hubs of Istanbul, Sofia and Tbilisi by providing an additional resilient and secure connection. Identifying the optimal route is a key step in the implementation of the Kardesa project.

The Government Information Service added that determining the exact route of the underwater optical cables is crucial for the successful implementation of the project.

At the end of January, Bulgartransgaz said that it would participate in the implementation of the Kardesa project.
