Hungary’s opposition Tisza Party, led by Peter Magyar, holds a significant lead according to the latest opinion polls ahead of Sunday’s parliamentary elections, data from several independent agencies show.
According to recent surveys, Magyar’s formation is ahead of the ruling Fidesz party of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, with the gap varying depending on the poll. Some studies indicate a substantial advantage for Tisza, including a double-digit lead among decided voters.
Other polls, however, show a much tighter race or even a lead for the ruling party, highlighting strong polarization and discrepancies among different polling agencies in the country.
Alongside the two main political forces, smaller parties such as Our Homeland Movement and the Democratic Coalition also have a chance of entering parliament, with support hovering around the 5% electoral threshold.
The elections are seen as the most serious challenge to Viktor Orban since he came to power in 2010, as the results could lead to a significant shift in the country’s political direction.
Voter turnout is expected to be high, while the final outcome remains difficult to predict amid a dynamic pre-election environment and a large share of undecided voters.
According to an analysis by the Budapest-based think tank Republikon Institute, cited by the Hungarian news agency MTI, pre-election surveys indicate an “exceptionally high readiness” to vote.
The record turnout was set in 2002, at 70.5% and 72.5% in the two rounds (following a 2014 legal change, parliamentary elections in Hungary are now held in a single round).
This record could be broken on Sunday, as voter turnout “appears to move in tandem with the stakes of the election,” and “in 2026 both major parties are placing greater importance on the elections than ever before”, the analysis says.
