An exhibition titled "Timeline - A Photographic Journey” opened on Wednesday at the National Assembly building. The Sofia Municipality initiative draws inspiration from the archives of photographer Georg Woltz, who captured iconic locations in Sofia more than a century ago.

Participants in the project photographed sites across the capital, including the National Assembly, the St Alexander Nevski cathedral, the Ivan Vazov National Theatre, the Military Club, Lions’ Bridge, the Roman Wall and others, documenting their contemporary appearance.

"We decided that everyone should see our beautiful city after its transformation," said Sofia Deputy Mayor Nadezhda Bacheva, who opened the exhibition. She added that the exhibition is a well-deserved recognition of Georg Woltz and that the National Assembly is one of the most emblematic venues for displaying these photographs.

Member of Parliament Manol Peykov recalled details from Woltz’s life, noting that he was of Dutch origin and that his family later settled in Greece. As a young man, his father wanted him to become a priest, but Woltz chose to pursue art and moved to Paris, where he studied under some of the leading photographers of the time, Peykov said. He added that Woltz later arrived in Bulgaria through his work and opened a studio in central Sofia, which he named the Museum of Photography.
