A specialized police operation in railway transport began on Thursday morning, the Interior Ministry reported on Thursday.

Police teams are monitoring trains and railway stations for abandoned or suspicious packages and luggage, passengers displaying confrontational behaviour, any actions posing a threat to railway security, as well as the movement of illegal migrants.

The operation is organised by RAILPOL, the European association of national police forces responsible for law and order in the railway sector, with similar actions being carried out simultaneously in all member states.

In Bulgaria, the tasks under the operation are being carried out by officers of the Gendarmerie Directorate. The operation is scheduled to conclude on January 23.

A similar operation was conducted at the same time of year in 2025, when the international initiative was titled Rail Action Day – Active Shield (RAD Active Shield).
