Bulgaria is hosting the first European Firesport Championship, bringing together 14 teams from eight countries: Czechia, Slovakia, Poland, Romania, Ukraine, Croatia, Germany and the host nation. The competition runs until August 30 in the town of Dolna Banya.
Opening the event on Tuesday, Interior Minister Daniel Mitov said: "Firesport is not just a competition, but a lesson in discipline, responsibility and teamwork. Every obstacle prepares you for real-life situations. You are the people who prove every day that courage means taking action."
Mitov added that even before the end of the summer season, this year has been the toughest yet for forest fires, with 9,300 fires extinguished in Bulgaria since July 1.
National Assembly Chair Nataliya Kiselova said that Europe has witnessed unprecedented wildfires this year. The tragic scenes of burned homes serve as a stark reminder of the importance for every country to have well-trained personnel and the necessary resources to deal with such disasters, she said.
The Ladder Climb final took place after the formal opening.
The championship features four disciplines. Individual events include the ladder climb and the 100-metre obstacle course, while team events comprise the 400-metre fire relay, and the combat deployment.
