Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and the Ville de Paris City Council unanimously voted to rename the square surrounding the Henri IV statue on the bridge Pont Neuf in honour of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, according to a statement posted on the Facebook page managed by the foundation that oversees their legacy.
The two artists met in Paris in 1958, beginning a lifelong partnership in both art and life.
The square around the statue of Henri IV, known as Place du Pont Neuf, will now be called "Christo et Jeanne-Claude."
BTA's LIK magazine dedicated its June issue to the 90th birth anniversary of the pioneering artist Christo (1935-2020) and his wife Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon (1935-2009). They were born on the same day, Christo Javacheff in Gabrovo (Central Bulgaria) and Jeanne-Claude in Casablanca.
In September 2025, Paris will mark 40 years since Christo and Jeanne-Claude transformed the Pont Neuf into a work of art. From September 22 to October 5, 1985, the oldest bridge in Paris was wrapped in 41,800 square metres of fabric, secured with 13 kilometres of rope and 12 tonnes of steel cables. This required the expertise of 12 engineers and 300 specialized workers.
This year also marks 30 years since Wrapped Reichstag in Berlin, and 20 years since The Gates installation in New York's Central Park.
