The unification of European communities, peace and victory are possible because the resilience and leadership of European women are a strength both in battles and in politics, Rositsa Kirova, Chair of the parliamentary Committee on Direct Participation of Citizens, Citizens' Complaints and Interaction with Civil Society, said here on Saturday, as quoted by her press office. She was speaking at a forum on "Women and Europe," held in Athens on the initiative of the Circular Economy and Climate Institute of the European Public Law Organization (EPLO).
"In recent years, the European Union has increasingly developed as an organisation where women are seen as its architects. In 2024, women made up 33.4% of national parliaments in the EU, up from 27.8% in 2014. In the European Parliament, women's representation has reached an even higher level, 39.9%," the Bulgarian representative said.
Kirova underscored that there has been significant progress in legislation that guarantees gender equality. The EU has introduced new rules aimed at reducing the gender pay gap and promoting fairness in the distribution of economic leadership roles, she argued.
As an example of the growing role of women in shaping the future of the EU in various sectors, she pointed to the green transition and support for renewables as part of the transformation of the energy architecture. "In geopolitical terms, the readiness to expand and include new members, including from the Western Balkans, strengthens the borders of our community. And at the same time, in terms of security, the EU seeks to be less dependent in defence, energy and technology", Kirova added.
