The responsibility for the caretaker cabinet lies entirely with the National Assembly, said President Iliana Iotova on Wednesday at the start of consultations with BSP - United Left as part of the procedure for appointing a caretaker prime minister.
"Many, if not all, have their arguments and proposals that clearly speak to the invalidity of the [2023] constitutional amendments," Iotova said. The President congratulated BSP - United Left on voting against the revisions. These amendments deprived the President of the right to choose a caretaker prime minister and government, Iotova noted. "My hope is that with a stable majority in the next parliament, these changes to the Constitution will be seriously reconsidered so that we appear sufficiently serious as institutions not only in the eyes of our European partners but also in the eyes of our own citizens," the head of State commented.
"I believe that we have a common goal. It was demanded by hundreds of thousands of citizens during the December 2025 anti-government] protests. Not only in terms of the fair work of the institutions and the fight against corruption, but as a prerequisite – fair, transparent and well-organised elections, so that we can restore confidence in the electoral process and, consequently, in the institutions," Iotova told the BSP - United Left representatives.
