The LNG terminal in Alexandroupolis is expected to restore 75% of its capacity as of October 1, and to reach its full output of around 166,000 MWh/day within months, after being offline since January due to booster pump failure, Bulgartransgaz said on Wednesday. The first LNG tanker is scheduled for regasification by the end of September. Since August, the facility has been operating at only 25% capacity.

“During this gas year, starting in October, Bulgaria will rely on secure LNG supplies from Alexandroupolis,” said Bulgartransgaz CEO Vladimir Malinov during a site visit. He stressed that the terminal ensures both regional supply security and diversification, with access to reliable sources such as the United States among others.

Malinov described Alexandroupolis as an essential element for guaranteeing diversified LNG deliveries in Southeast Europe and noted that work continues on the Vertical Gas Corridor in Bulgaria, which will enable uninterrupted LNG transit across the region. The corridor’s Bulgarian infrastructure is expected to be completed by October 1, 2026, with the government having recently approved state guarantees for Bulgartransgaz loans to finance construction.
