Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski’s Faculty of Economics and Business Administration is already part of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) through its participation in the organization’s formats and initiatives, Dean Atanas Georgiev said on Friday.

Sofia University hosted a lecture by OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann on Bulgaria’s path to OECD membership. The event was organized by the Diplomatic Institute to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, in partnership with the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration.

"Bulgaria joining the OECD is a key issue in the work of a business and economics faculty, and the university is already working very actively on the topic," Georgiev said. Through its Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Sofia University has been an associate member of the OECD’s financial education network since 2021, he added.

Among those attending the event on Friday were outgoing Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev, Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski Rector Georgi Valchev, and representatives of the diplomatic corps, State institutions, academia, lecturers and students.

OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann paid a working visit to Bulgaria in early February 2026 to present the OECD’s third Economic Survey of Bulgaria. The survey was presented in Sofia at the Council of Ministers, where Cormann appeared together with outgoing Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov and outgoing ministers, and he also held meetings with organised civil society, including the chairpersons of the Economic and Social Council, focusing on the remaining accession procedures and key economic and social reforms.
