Joining the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) will help Bulgaria draw on the good practices created in the past years to the fullest in this growingly insecure world, Prof. Georgi Valchev, Rector of the St Kliment Ohridski University of Sofia, said here on Friday. He was addressing those attending the university-hosted public lecture of OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann on Bulgaria’s path to OECD membership.

OECD membership is one of Bulgaria's next big goals, the Rector went on to say. He noted the complex transition period, during which Bulgaria's society and economy suffered complex transformations. Still, Bulgaria managed to achieve quite a few successes, such as its EU, Schengen, and eurozone memberships, he recalled.

The public lecture was part of Cormann’s working visit to Bulgaria and was organized by the Diplomatic Institute under the Minister of Foreign Affairs, jointly with the Foreign Ministry and Sofia University, in cooperation with the university’s Faculty of Economics. Attending the event were outgoing Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev, Faculty of Economics Dean Atanas Georgiev, Diplomatic Institute head Tanya Mihaylova as moderator, representatives of the diplomatic corps, state institutions, academic circles, lecturers, and students.
