site.btaExhibition Showcases Kotel Carpets and the Artists Behind Them
The exhibition “The Artist and the Carpet. Designs for the Kotel Carpet-Weaving School” was presented today for the first time in Bulgaria at the Lyubor Bayer Exhibition Hall in Stara Zagora.
The exhibition traces the development of the Kotel carpet as one of the most significant phenomena in Bulgarian applied art and reveals the dialogue between folk tradition and professional artistic thinking.
Visitors can view carpets from the collection of Petya Yaneva, dated to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. “What we want to show with this exhibition is that behind the carpets, in addition to everything else, there are many artists who worked on them, so that they would fit into the fashion trends of their time,” the collector explained.
Also on display are designs by prominent Bulgarian artists such as Prof. Stefan Badzhov, Elena Stoyanova, and Konstantsa Gancheva, which show how traditional ornamentation develops and is enriched under the influence of modern art.
The curator of the exhibition is Dora Kurshumova, who has been working long-term on the study of Kotel carpets. “We are showing more than 20 Kotel carpets, and most of them have identified authors—artists—while the weavers are the skillful craftswomen from the Kotel region,” Kurshumova told BTA.
The exhibition is co-organized by the Orlitsa Foundation and can be viewed until February 21.
