Greek sailors went on strike on Thursday demanding the evacuation of colleagues from the Middle East, the online edition of the newspaper Kathimerini reported, citing information from the Panhellenic Seamen's Federation.

Ships remained at anchor across Greece. The nationwide strike was declared for a period of 24 hours and affects all categories of vessels, the publication explained.

In a statement, the federation's leadership described the situation caused by the war in the Middle East as "particularly serious and dangerous", noting that hundreds of Greek and foreign sailors remain stranded in the region.

A demonstration against the war is planned for Thursday in the Cypriot capital Nicosia. It is intended as a protest against the strikes on Iran carried out by Israel and the United States and the military activity at British bases in Cyprus, the non-governmental organization Cyprus Peace Council said, as quoted by the Cyprus Mail.
