There is no direct threat to Bulgaria, only possible asymmetric risks, BSP-United Left Floor Leader Nataliya Kiselova told journalists Thursday after a meeting of the Security Council with the Council of Ministers in connection with the conflict in the Middle East.
Kiselova said the information presented at the meeting showed that there was no immediate danger, only potential asymmetric threats, and that specific questions had been put to the ministers, members of the Security Council and the heads of the security services. She explained that “asymmetric” referred to the use of otherwise ordinary activities to disrupt the functioning of various civilian or state infrastructures, stressing that these were potential risks rather than concrete, real threats.
In response to a question about whether the cabinet had a plan to cope with the situation, Kiselova said that much of the preparatory work had already been carried out by the government of Rosen Zhelyazkov. She added that specific questions had been raised and that both the Foreign Minister and the Finance Minister had stated that follow-up measures would be taken to ensure the normal functioning of supply chains, not only for oil and gas but also for essential goods such as food, water and medicines.
Kiselova also pointed out that the rapidly changing geopolitical situation from Friday to the present required constant reassessment. In her words, Bulgaria’s actions should remain coordinated with those of the other EU Member States and NATO allies.
