site.btaHigher Electricity Bills Due to Increased Consumption, Deputy Energy Minister Says
The main reason for higher electricity bills during the current heating season is increased individual consumption linked to lower temperatures in January compared with the same period in 2025, Deputy Energy Minister Krasimir Nenov said during a hearing in the National Assembly of Bulgaria on Thursday.
The hearing, requested by the Vazrazhdane party, focused on higher electricity bills and the numerous complaints filed in recent months.
Nenov explained that inspections carried out by the Ministry of Energy were related to a comprehensive assessment of the technical condition, operation and maintenance of energy facilities. In some cases, inspections identified issues related to the technical safety of electricity meters, but these were not connected to the problems reported by consumers, he said.
"Where technical causes were identified, they have already been addressed and customers’ bills will be corrected," Nenov added.
He noted that inspections will continue until each individual case is fully clarified.
The Deputy Minister also said that Ministry experts had carried out additional extraordinary inspections, covering about 1,000 commercial metering devices selected at random.
