Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Zafirov and Stara Zagora Regional Governor Nedelcho Marinov held a meeting after taking part in the Council for Administrative Reform chaired by Zafirov, the Government Information Service said on Thursday.

The main topic of discussion at the meeting was recent shocking disclosures of inhumane conditions in unlicensed nursing homes in the village of Yagoda, Stara Zagora region, as well as in the village of Govedartsi, Sofia region. “We are following what is happening with concern. What we have seen in recent days shows once again what a sick society we have become. We do not have a minute to lose in this battle,” Zafirov said.

He reaffirmed that the state would take measures to fully renovate all homes that are currently undergoing repairs so that the elderly can live in decent conditions. Over BGN 750,000,000 are currently being invested under Bulgaria’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan for the renovation of 81 homes for the elderly and the construction of 254 facilities providing social services for people with disabilities.

Various social topics were discussed at the meeting, including issues related to the infrastructure of the region.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Bulgarian Socialist Party Chair, Atanas Zafirov, accepted the invitation and next week, after the meeting of the Council of Ministers, he will visit the Stara Zagora region to get acquainted with the challenges it faces. A special place in his program will be allocated for a visit to the Memorial House on Mt Buzludzha. He will be acquainted with the project for the reconstruction and restoration of the memorial.

The Monument House of the Bulgarian Communist Party, built on Buzludzha Peak in central Bulgaria by the Bulgarian communist government and inaugurated in 1981, currently stands in a state of severe disrepair, yet attracts visitors from around the world.
