Although the dual circulation period has ended and the euro is now the only legal tender in the country, traders should bear in mind that dual pricing of goods continues until August 8, said Vladimir Ivanov, Chair of the Coordination Centre on Euro Adoption. He made this statement during the Centre's regular briefing at the Council of Ministers building in Sofia on Tuesday.

Ivanov stated that the euro is now the only legal tender in Bulgaria and citizens have ample time to exchange their leva. He added that banks will continue to offer this service free of charge until mid-year and the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) will continue to do so indefinitely.

He cited BNB data from January 30, showing that BGN 7.7 billion were in circulation in Bulgaria, representing 75% of the cash in circulation on that date. He also noted that, between January 5 and 31, Bulgarian Posts carried out 92,200 currency exchange transactions totalling BGN 145 million.

Ivanov called on merchants and citizens not to treat post offices as banks, but to use the banking system instead, as commercial banks are more than capable of handling the volume of transactions. He expressed his gratitude to Bulgarian Posts for engaging in activities that are not typical of them.

He presented data showing that the Consumer Protection Commission carried out 288 inspections between January 22 and 29, with the most common complaints being related to incorrect currency conversion and unjustified price increases.

As at January 28, 2026, the National Revenue Agency had carried out over 6,000 inspections, issuing 350 violation reports and 70 penalty orders for property sanctions totalling EUR 192,675.
