The Bulgarian-Romanian film The Day She Will Be Born, directed and co-written by Emil Spahiyski, won the award for Best Short Film at the Samskara International Film Festival in India, the festival’s website reported on Friday.

The Samskara Festival puts a focus on independent cinema and brings together filmmakers from around the world. It takes place in the city of Dehradun, in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Its programme includes short films, feature films, and documentaries exploring artistic, cultural, and social themes. The festival aims to support new talent and encourage creative dialogue through screenings, awards, and meetings with filmmakers.

The Day She Will Be Born is about people affected by dementia and their complex relationships with their loved ones. It highlights the power of love, which saves us in life’s most difficult moments.

The screenplay was written by journalist Emil Spahiyski and Romanian director Bogdan Muresanu, whose most recent film, The New Year That Never Came, was selected for the Horizons competitive section at the Venice International Film Festival. The cinematographer is Kiril Prodanov (The Trap), and the producer is Doli Productions.

The film was funded by Bulgaria’s National Film Centre and is based on the short story of the same name by Yordanka Beleva.
