Customs officers seized over EUR 85,000 in undeclared currency during inspections at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint, the Customs Agency office in Svilengrad said on Tuesday.

The banknotes were discovered in four separate cases, with the largest quantity of them being found by customs officers during an inspection of a truck with Turkish registration on January 28. During the inspection, customs officers found a total of EUR 40,000 in the drawer under the bed in the driver's cabin, as well as in the driver's jacket pocket, the customs press centre noted.

A few days later EUR 20,000 were found in the jacket of another truck driver, while a total of EUR 26,000 were found in two separate truck drivers from Germany, one travelling to Jordan and the other to Syria.

Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated in the cases, with all violators being charged with administrative offenses.
