The first stage of connecting the Akkuyu nuclear power plant to Turkiye's energy system has been completed, the Star online media reported Tuesday. The facility, which Turkiye is building in partnership with Russia's Rosatom near the southwestern city of Mersin, is the country's first nuclear power plant.

In addition to the successful connection to the energy system, the plant's transformers were transported and installed, Star said, quoting a press release of the Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation. The installation of the high-voltage elements on the transformers and the systems for cooling and control continues.

Energy experts describe Akkuyu as a plant that will bring Turkiye to the forefront of electricity production and have a significant impact not only on the country's economy but also on that of the whole region. The project envisages four nuclear units of 1,200 MW each. Akkuyu was planned to become operational in 2025, but a delay postponed the launch date to 2026.
