European Commissioner Zaharieva Gets Acquainted with Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Projects

The participation of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) in the EU's key funding programme for research and innovation, Horizon Europe, was discussed at a meeting at the Academy between Corresponding member Evelina Slavcheva, President of the Academy, and Ekaterina Zaharieva, European Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation, the press centre of the institution announced on Friday.

The meeting was also attended by Professor Neli Koseva, Scientific Secretary-General of BAS, and Yordanka Chobanova, Head of the European Commission’s Permanent Representation in Bulgaria.

“Bulgaria is making progress in the field of hydrogen technologies,” Slavcheva said at the meeting. She presented the Academy’s idea to initiate an international regional project for the introduction of hydrogen fuel in heavy-duty transport and spoke about the first hydrogen charging station for Bulgaria and the region, which marks the beginning of hydrogen mobility in the country. The need for a state policy in the field of hydrogen technologies was also discussed.

Slavcheva invited the Bulgarian European Commissioner to visit BAS institutes and get acquainted with the scientific achievements of the Academy.

During the discussions an emphasis was placed on encouraging young people to choose the profession of researcher. The connection between science and business was reviewed at the meeting.

Professor Koseva presented the activities of the Joint Innovation Centre of BAS and the projects in the field of green technologies and digitization, the aim of which is to reach a high level of technological readiness.
