In a speech in the plenary hall of the European Parliament on Tuesday, UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock said that the international order is under attack. She made this statement during the February plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg that continues on Tuesday. Key topics include Europe's ability to defend itself in an evolving international landscape, particularly in relation to its ties with the US, cooperation with NATO, and Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine.

Baerbock said that, in today's world, conflicts are not fought in self-defence, but as a challenge to the world order. At a crucial moment, she said, some powers are withdrawing from international organizations and principles considered immutable are being called into question.

The German representative stated that the UN needs the whole world, including Europe. Together with Europe, the UN must defend the truth in a world awash with fake news and disinformation. She emphasized that unity is key to international cooperation, citing the adoption of the first package of EU sanctions against Russia following the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces in February 2022 as an example. She said that the unity demonstrated by the EU at that time was in the name of preserving world order and peace. In closing her speech, Baerbock stressed that respect for human rights is essential for living in peace and prosperity.
