Responding to accusations by Morality, Unity, Honour (MECh) of political bias and of using the president’s office for political purposes, President Iliana Iotova Tuesday said that she does not renounce her biography in any way. She made the statement after MECh representatives walked out of talks held as part of the procedure to appoint a caretaker prime minister.
During the talks, MECh leader Radostin Vasilev pointed to Iotova’s long-standing membership and active involvement in the Bulgarian Socialist Party and accused her of being part of “the oligarchic–totalitarian model.“ “I believe that you had a moral obligation, after President Radev resigned - not for health reasons or because of incompatibility - to submit your resignation together with him,” Vasilev told Iotova. “In the eyes of the public, it appears that he [Radev] used the institution to create a political party, and that you are now using the office to campaign for president,” Vasilev added.
“Obviously, they came to make statements for their election campaign,” Iotova said after the MECh MPs departed.
The President noted that her record is clear and transparent to all Bulgarian citizens, who have elected her multiple times as a member of Parliament, as a representative of Bulgaria in the European Parliament, and as vice president.
Responding to the MECh leader's statement that she should have resigned when President Rumen Radev (2017–2026) did, Iotova said that, in accordance with constitutional provisions, the vice president assumes the president’s powers if the president resigns.
