As four years are marked since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared on Tuesday that this country will continue to stand with Ukraine, in support of its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders,

"Today, as we mark four years since the beginning of Russia's full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine, we honour the profound sacrifice of the Ukrainian people in their courageous self-defence and valiant struggle to defend not only their own freedom and human dignity, but also the sovereign right of every nation to choose its own future," the Ministry declared further.

The statement continued that "over the last four years, Ukraine has withstood immense hardship and devastation, overcoming daily deprivation and systemic indiscriminate attacks on the country’s energy, transport and other civilian infrastructure with unwavering strength and heroic perseverance".

"History teaches us that every war ultimately ends with diplomacy, and today we need diplomacy more than ever. We welcome and support the ongoing strong commitment of the United States to pursue a negotiated resolution to end the aggression," continued MFA.

"Standing at the juncture of this grim anniversary we strongly believe that 2026 must be the year when the guns will go silent, restoring a peace that is just, durable, credible and consistent with international law and the UN Charter; a peace without concessions that reward aggression; a peace underpinned by credible security guarantees to Ukraine that would discourage any future military aggression in Europe and worldwide," the statement added.

The ministry says further that a strong, independent, and democratic Ukraine is indispensable for the stability of the Black Sea region and the broader Euro-Atlantic area. Ukraine’s security and resilience strengthen the security architecture of our continent and upholds the rules-based order on which global peace and prosperity depend.

The Ministry of Defence has provided 13 aid packages to Ukraine since the outbreak of the conflict.
