Customs officers seized nearly 40 tonnes of smuggled vegetables at the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint, the regional press centre of the Customs Agency in Svilengrad said on Tuesday.

The vegetables were found during inspections of three trucks entering Bulgaria from Turkiye. The total net weight of undeclared vegetables is over 40 tonnes, the Customs Agency noted, adding that according to the norms of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, the allowed quantity of vegetables imported by individuals from third countries for personal consumption without a phytosanitary certificate is five kilograms.

This is the first case of established smuggling of vegetables at the checkpoint in 2025. The drivers of the trucks have been fined, customs officials pointed out.
