A donor situation took place on Wednesday at a hospital in the northeastern Bulgarian town of Silistra. The donor was a 73-year-old man whose kidneys and liver will give three people a chance to live, said on Thursday Dr Radoslav Nedelchev, coordinator of the team that carried out the explantation.
“We confirmed brain death on October 13. The hospital contacted the Executive Agency for Medical Supervision, and the organs were offered to three hospitals in Bulgaria, but for various reasons, coordination was established with a hospital in Bucharest. The explantation procedure was completed around 7 a.m. on Thursday, and the organs were transported to Romania,” Dr Nedelchev said.
A similar donor situation occurred at the Silistra hospital earlier this year. Then, too, the donor was a 73-year-old man in brain death. As no suitable recipients were found in Bulgaria, his organs were again provided to hospitals in Romania under a bilateral agreement between the two countries.
