The European Parliament will discuss the state of the rule of law in Bulgaria on October 22, according to the final agenda for the upcoming session in Strasbourg. The inclusion of the topic on the agenda was requested by the Renew Europe group.

The debate is entitled "The continuing attacks on democratic institutions and the rule of law in Bulgaria" and is part of the procedure for
a topical debate of major interest to EU policy requested by a political group. The rule in this case provides for the debate to end without a resolution being adopted.

Renew Europe announced its intention to initiate such a debate in July, when a protest was held in Brussels against the arrest of Varna Mayor Blagomir Kotsev. The group sent a letter to the European Commission in September linking the case against Mayor Kotsev to the assessment of the allocation of funds under Bulgaria's National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
