site.btaEnergy Minister Highlights Eurozone Entry Benefits and Importance of Regulated Market for Bulgarian Households

Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov emphasized the positive impact Bulgaria’s upcoming entry into the eurozone will have on the country’s energy sector during the launch of an information campaign in Burgas on Tuesday. It was also attended by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, Transport Minister Grozdan Karadjov, Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova, Tourism Minister Miroslav Borshosh, central bank Governor Dimitar Radev, the head of the European Commission representation in Bulgaria, Yordanka Chobanova, and Burgas Mayor Dimitar Nikolov.
He pointed to the Government’s priority to build units 7 and 8 at the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, noting that eurozone membership will significantly lower financing costs. “Talks with partners from Westinghouse and Hyundai, as well as with international banks, clearly show that only with our membership in the eurozone will the fees and interest rates on financing be three times lower," Stankov said.
Stankov also stressed the importance of maintaining the regulated energy market for households to keep electricity bills affordable. He noted that in July, the average electricity bill in Bulgaria was about BGN 60 (around EUR 30.68), which would have been 46% higher without the regulated market agreement.
“Bulgaria, alongside Hungary, ranks among the EU countries with the lowest electricity prices for households,” he said, calling this “real protection for every Bulgarian family.”
The Minister added that the Government is committed to ensuring high energy prices will not be passed on to goods and services, helping Bulgarian businesses remain competitive internationally.
His remarks were made in the presence of Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov and other top officials during the launch of the national campaign supporting Bulgaria’s transition to the euro on January 1, 2026.
