Three Bulgarian red wines were awarded Grand Gold Medals at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles (CMB), while another 17 received gold medals and 13 earned silver medals, the official Bulgarian representatives for the international wine contest said on Friday.

A total of 7,165 wines from 49 countries entered this year's edition of CMB, which was held in China. The jury, conducting a blind tasting, consisted of 375 international experts from 56 countries.

Bulgaria’s CMB ambassador Meglena Mihova said the country’s strong performance highlights the growing international recognition of Bulgarian wines, particularly those produced in the Trakia region (Southern Bulgaria). "The results confirm our country's position on the global wine map and the excellence of our producers. Winning a Grand Gold Medal at CMB is an exceptional achievement, as only about 1% of the wines entered receive this highest distinction," she added.

The Grand Gold Medals went to two Villa Yambol wines: Vineyards Selection Topoltsa Syrah 2019 and Kabile Syrah Reserve 2019, as well as to Merul Reserve Merlot 2018 of the Kovex-2 Rumelia Wine Cellar.

Medals at the competition in China were also awarded to producers from Kazakhstan, Germany, Bolivia, Lebanon, Mauritius, Hungary, Mexico, Romania, Slovenia, Turkiye, among many others. The medal tally was topped by Spain with 361 medals (16 Grand Gold), Italy with 343 medals (15 Grand Gold), France with 377 medals (15 Grand Gold), and Portugal with 290 medals (14 Grand Gold).

The CMB is an internationally recognized traveling competition divided into four sessions: rosé wines, red and white wines, sparkling wines, and sweet and fortified wines. Each year, more than 15,000 samples submitted by producers worldwide are tasted and evaluated by an expert panel. Today, CMB stands as one of the largest international events of its kind.
